Moneyball — In 1997, Billy Beane became general manager of the Oakland A’s. Soon after, Billy began using baseball statistics for decision-making in terms of trades, rosters, etc… instead of players’ star status or recent success. Beane embraced this methodology with vigor and his stance was both successful and extremely controversial since it went against the industry norm. Due to the insight Billy gained from existing data, the Oakland Athletics, which at the time were considered weak in talent and the second lowest budgeted team, had a remarkable season. The A’s had a total of ninety-four wins, taking the AL West crown, beating a really tough Texas team, and extending the AL Division Series to five games before ultimately falling to the Detroit Tigers. It was an incredible season and story that inspired a book and later a movie.

By re-evaluating the strategies that produced wins on the field, the 2002 Athletics, with approximately US$41 million in salary, were competitive with larger market teams such as the New York Yankees, who spent over three times the payroll (US$125 million) that same season. The same concepts have gained recognition by our industry, coined by the phrase Manufacturing Moneyball:

“Manufacturing is experiencing an industrial renaissance as a result of its application of business intelligence (BI) to discover and leverage data that is either hidden, or unappreciated
